What Are Dentures?
When you lose a tooth dentures are removable artificial teeth which are made to fill the gap. They can be full dentures, for those who have lost all of their natural teeth, or partial dentures for those who are missing only some of their natural teeth.
Full dentures, also known as complete dentures, are fabricated when a patient loses all of the natural teeth on either their upper or lower jaw. The appliance will consist of a plastic base that rests on the gums and a full set of artificial teeth. Full dentures are removable for cleaning purposes and should be removed overnight.
Partial dentures restore your smile when only a few teeth are missing. These appliances are usually supported by neighbouring teeth and allowing you to smile, speak and chew properly. The appliance can either be made with a metal framework or a plastic base for supporting teeth. Plastic partial dentures have generally been used for temporary or emergency purposes such as enabling the bone and gum to heal before a definitive restorative solution is applied.

How Are Partial Dentures Made?
The first step in making a partial denture is a dental exam. Your Denturist will check for any problems that might interfere with your future success in wearing a partial, and may potentially suggest other dental work which needs to be completed by your dentist prior to fabrication of the partial denture.
Your Denturist then takes impressions and designs the support structure for the partial. The individual teeth are set individually, by hand and the you will return to the office for an appointment to approve them. After any final changes are made, the partial dentures will be finished and then you will return to the office to have them fitted in your mouth. Over the next few months, it’s normal to expect to return for adjustments and fittings.
How Should You Care for Partial Dentures?
It is important for you to care about your partial dentures in order to keep them in prime condition. Some major steps include:
Consistent cleaning – You must regularly brush them with a soft-bristle toothbrush and denture paste. Ensure to not use regular toothpaste as it is too abrasive and could result in damage.
Frequent checkups – The structure of your mouth will keep on changing as you age. This makes it necessary to see your Denturist to evaluate whether or not your dentures need to be updated.
