Caring for your dentures isn’t complicated. With minimal effort you can ensure it will last its full five to seven year lifespan. However, it’s important to be consistent. Daily maintenance and care practices should be rigorously followed. Adhere to the following five guidelines for best results.
- Clean your dentures
A denture that’s properly cleaned every day will safeguard your oral health. Use a denture toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to clean the prosthesis. Just like regular teeth, dentures are prone to plaque and tartar build-up and thereby need to be brushed daily to keep your smile healthy and happy. - Soak your dentures every night
Use a denture solvent every night to disinfect the prosthesis. Always use products designed for this purpose and avoid other common household cleaners like bleach to do the job. These aggressive products can damage your denture and negatively impact your health. - Practice good oral hygiene
Regardless of whether you have partial or complete dentures, you need to maintain your mouth’s health by keeping it clean. Before placing your dentures in your mouth each morning, massage your gums, tongue and palate with a soft toothbrush and a bit of paste. Rinse with water after. Any remaining natural teeth in your mouth need to be flossed and brushed twice a day. The second part of practicing good oral hygiene is to schedule and maintain regular checkups with a denturist in Calgary. An annual exam of your mouth will ensure early detection of diseases that if caught early can be effectively treated. - Be gentle with your dentures
Your dentures need to be prevented from impacting a hard surface. In other words, try not to drop it. Be careful when taking your denture in and out of your mouth. Some people prefer to fill their sink with water so that in the event the denture does fall, the blow won’t cause the prosthesis to shatter. Or, you could place a folded towel over the bathroom vanity to similarly safeguard against breaks. - Be wary of hard and/ or sticky foods
People that wear dentures can and should enjoy dining in Calgary as much as anyone else. But to protect against possible embarrassment or breaks, it’s best to be cautious against biting into any hard foods. Corn on the cob, uncooked apples or carrots, and nuts are all better left alone. Sticky foods, especially candies like toffee or caramel can also cause problems for denture wearers.
